Position Purpose:

The special education paraprofessional position exists to provide quality services to special education students through a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, tutorial assistance and consultation to general education staff.


The paraprofessional reports to the School Staffing Coordinator.

Minimum Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare student education plans in consultation with the school district administrative team
  • Design instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
  • Monitor student progress, participate in review and revision of IEP, as appropriate
  • Assist other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation and evaluation of student progress
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and submit reports as required
  • Articulate curriculum between and among student levels
  • Prepare student reports and activities as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists and professionals to develop individual education plans designed to promote students' educational, physical and social development
  • Teach personal development skills such as goal setting, independence and self-advocacy
  • Attend staff meetings as required
  • Prepare, administer and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress
  • Administer specialized testing as necessary
  • Follow-up with concerns from teachers, parents and/or administrative staff
  • Perform other duties as necessary

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in secondary education /elementary education from an accredited college or university
  • PA Teaching Certification
